Il capo-correttore era un omino basso, uno scozzese feroce sul lavoro, e ubriaco il resto.

My comment:

The verb "cacciare" means "to hunt".
The expression "su due piedi" means "without delay/hesitation"

You have to be very creative and find an expression in English combining both the meanings.
