I am an independent Spanish>English and Italian>English translator and a member of the American Translators Association and the New York Circle of Translators. Through various professional experience in the music, retail, and restaurant industries in New York City, I have had the pleasure of frequent exposure to Spanish and Italian which has fueled my passion for these languages. After over a decade of related work experience and many years of both independent and formal language study, I enrolled at Adelphi University to pursue my Certificate in Translation Studies and a rewarding career in translation services. In my free time, I am an avid reader of history and novels in Spanish and Italian, especially Cuban history and European noir novels. I actively participate in language and cultural exchanges with people all over the world who are learning English. I also love collaborating with organizations that consistently use volunteer linguists, especially Translators without Borders and TED.
I worked for many years as a manufacturer’s rep in the housewares industry, representing companies that produce electrical home appliances, cookware, dinnerware, and table top items. I collaborated with Italian and Spanish-speaking product managers to prepare packaging, advertising, messaging, labeling, and user manuals and how-to guides for presentation at retail in the North American market for major retailers with stores in the US, Canada, and Mexico. My position required a unique combination of language and marketing skills to connect American English-speaking end consumers with European and Latin American products and concepts, refining the messaging to account for appropriate linguistic norms and cultural context depending on the target audience and end consumer. I was also responsible for strategic sales planning, inventory analysis, product assortment selection, market analysis, and all relevant communication related to these responsibilities between the vendors and merchants.
I was assistant manager of an online store for string instruments and accessories, and eventually owner of my own ecommerce company and website. I directly served many international customers that comprise the global music community and communicated with many from Latin America and Europe. Through my experience I developed an expansive knowledge of a specialized terminology of string instruments and their parts, components, and accessories to be able to clearly communicate product descriptions and details across language barriers.
It’s no secret that New York’s legendary restaurant scene owes its existence in large part to the incredible work of an expansive Spanish speaking population. Due to my language abilities, I was able to serve as communication liaison between Spanish and English-speaking personnel for faster and more efficient operations in the establishment. My unique experience was on the production team of an independent craft brewery, where I facilitated communication across the Spanish/English language barrier while overseeing ingredient processing/preparation, organization, storage, cleaning, and sanitation. There I developed an extensive knowledge of terminologies associated with beverages and fermentation with emphasis on the production process, packaging and labeling, advertising, event promotion, distribution, and sales, and terminologies characteristic of restaurants in general, including menus, signage, bulletins, advertising, social media publications, and more.
I am a classically trained cellist of over 20 years and a university music school graduate. As a result, I am intimately familiar with terminologies pertaining to classical sheet music and scores, academic texts in the theoretical, historical, and pedagogical disciplines, biographies of conductors, musicians, and composers, concert programs, CD booklets and supplemental album information, and journalistic writing in articles, critiques, and reviews. I’ve spent significant time studying music in Italy where I wrote original music and Italian lyrics for eclectic ensembles. As is quite common for string players, my music career involved detailed study of the music, stories, and lyrics of Italian opera where I frequently performed works by Puccini, Verdi, Rossini, Donizetti, Mascagni, Monteverdi, and of course Mozart. I’ve written original music and string arrangements for Spanish-speaking musicians and lyricists, such as 2Divine and Daniel Bazán, performing with them in live concerts and studio album recordings. I graduated with a Bachelor of Arts in Music, Magna Cum Laude and High Honors from the Aaron Copland School of Music and the William E. Macaulay Honors College at CUNY after several years of intensive musical study with a special focus on performance and composition. I also served as assistant conducting teacher under Dr. Joel Mandelbaum. I’ve performed with various ensembles throughout the US, Canada, and Europe and have had the pleasure of engaging with many diverse audiences.
