WORK EXPERIENCE 1962 to 2006
Jobs performed and positions held.
• I started with Cable & Wireless plc in 1960 at their Engineering College and worked for them for 10 years in Brazil before leaving in 1972 at the post of Manager and Chief Engineer. After that I worked in the Brazilian Maranhão State Telecommunications’ Company as Technical Director until 1976.
• I spent another 30 years working in Brazil for ETE Telecommunication and Electrical Engineering (20 years) and ALFA Engineering (10 years) as Director with responsibilities for Finance, Administration, Contract Management and Supervision and IT.
• The main language spoken and written at all of these firms was Portuguese but during my time with them I translated many documents and technical manuals for their use.
TRANSLATION EXPERIENCE
Work Experience.
• I did a lot of translations for the firms that I worked for, to help them with their daily needs, including ad hoc at meetings with international clients. During my time with ETE Engineering I spent two years in Nigeria as their chief supervisor on a large contract and responsible for translations and interpreting work for them within the Nigerian Ministry of Communications (literally hundreds of hours). Also I travelled extensively for them to present tenders and participate in high level negotiations, in just about all of the countries in South America, Nigeria, Portugal, as well as representing the Brazilian Government for Telecommunications during an Official visit of the Minister for External Affairs to Iran.
• I am registered with the JUNTA COMERCIAL DO ESTADO DE SÃO PAULO Nr 1446 as a Public Translator and Commercial Interpreter authorised to legally certify documents translated to and from Portuguese and English, according to Brazilian law.
• I am also registered with the Chartered Institute of Linguists, membership Nr. 24714, with the original number of 6666 being obtained in January 1970.
• I occasionally translate and interpret, on a voluntary basis for the Citizens Advice Bureau, and professionally for local firms that need my services. 15 hours of interpreting since May 2012.
• For Applied Language Solutions I have worked with their MOJ contract for interpreting in court and tribunals, for a total of 150 hours since May 2012.
• I regularly translate documents of a legal nature such as Birth, Death, Marriage and Divorce Certificates, school documents and any other type of personal document, and Manuals and Reference books in Engineering (mainly Telecommunication and Electrical).
