My comment:

Solo un comentario a tu traducción. Se me ocurre: "tenían fama/eran famosos"... en vez de ser "legendarios" (personajes de leyenda) porque "notorious" tiene una connotación negativa: 1. famous or well known, typically for some bad quality or deed.

Hay un dicho mexicano que reza: cría fama y acuéstate a dormir, implica que una vez que se te conoce por algo (malo generalmente) no tienes escapatoria (como la chica que salía con todos los muchachos en la prepa o el chavo que tomaba mucho en las fiestas = se criaron fama de "mujer fácil" y de "borracho") y con nada se la quitan...
