My comment:

I would not translate "gendarmerie" in English, since it is a specific French police body (in fact the military police) -different from the city police and from the traditional policeman
"committed" does not have the meaning of "commis" in French. The general meaning is being appointed or designated or, as Claude Le Frapper indicated, mandated.
You must stick to legal terminology.
