Geea (a guest user) asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

General

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

avec les moyens du bord

Context:

Mr. [nom] gère son ménage avec les moyens du bord et n’arrive pas à assurer

Keywords:

...la scolarisation de ses enfants avec ses maigres revenus. Il est marié et père de sept enfants de trois femmes différentes. Le modeste atelier qu’il tient aujourd’hui n’est pas bien équipé faute de moyens. /// I can't think of it in English...obviously nothing to do with "on-board", this expression is something about him managing his household finances with meager income...right? I don't want to repeat that exact wording twice, though. TIA.

immediately disposable financial resources

My comment:

n.m. pl. moyens
1. Ressources pécuniaires: Vivre au-dessus de ses moyens (revenus).
2. Aptitudes physiques ou intellectuelles: La peur lui fait perdre tous ses moyens (capacité). Employer les grands moyens, prendre des mesures énergiques. Moyens du bord, ceux dont on peut disposer immédiatement. Par ses propres moyens, avec ses seules ressources, sans aucune aide.

Or "on a SMALL pittance." Both 'mere' and 'small" could be considered redundant in relation to "pittance,", although they are often used as part of the phase.

means available

My comment:

Ich found this on LEO but I'm not sure. I exactly know waht it means in French but I can't really say it in English. It means that you help yourself with available things. For example, when a catastrophy happened, you must use instead of chair maybe a box, etc...
