My comment:

complementarity should be the correct answer but it implies that each bring something positive to the other. Your text seems to be about the negative elements of the relationship. Therefore i think interdependence fits best. It works for both negative and positive effects.

"Interlocking" could convey the message you are envisaging, but complementarity is in fact the best word in terms of translation, from a Portuguese native person's point of view. Interlocking would mean um sistema combinado.
