Hi Barbara. Non-literal options could include "beyond endurance/past endurance" :-)

the verb tense has to be pluperfect. As soon as I had + verb. Also, peak resistance sounds like a sports thing. This isn't sports. It's a person's resistance to doing something. And he wasn't reaching it, he had to overcome it.....so the meaning here is wrong.

For me, I didn't understand the context as the person having to "overcome" it. Pour moi, c'est le facteur de résistance qui serait dépassé "exceeded", i.e. as soon as he would have reached the limit of what he could endure. And to your point regarding "peak resistance", I did offer "ultimate" as an alternative in my comment :-)

To Jane cc. Barbara. I thought about your comment further and can see what you implied, "as soon as my ultimate resistance level/maximum endurance limit was overcome/transcended"

as soon as I had overcome my maximum resistance to doing so

My comment:

Of course, no literal option works...but it is about resistance to leaving the virtual space.

I heard the words spouting from his[her] mouth but couldn't believe this was anything other but a nightmare, a virtual space I could get out of at any time [see above]
