Puesto que la RAE define "de cuerpo presente" como: "Dicho de un cadáver: Expuesto y preparado para ser llevado al enterramiento", te sugiero lo anterior.
He/she kneeled before X's grave to pay him the homage he/she (had been unable/could not) to pay before his open casket.
