It seems from your excerpts that the text is making a comparison between each of the parties' interest in the case.

My comment:

avoir intérêt à=yes, to be in someone's interest to or to have the most at stake, in proper English. In this case, it's just easier to use stake because of the most....
otherwise you need a longer sentence in English..
