Barbara, does "carozza" refers to a particular vehicle?

I think that "carrozza" actually refers to a open carriage, so it would be the kind of blanket one would wear over their lap so they are not exposed to the elements.

Thank you Barbara, this is exactly what I believe this blanket is. I remember the old convertible cars. The drivers used to wear a pelisse (long cloak often coming with fur lining)

travel blanket/rug

My comment:

I agree with the comments about the origins, but since the debut of the car a travel(ling) blanket or travel rug is more appropriate to the time period.

(fur) carriage robe

My comment:

Carriage passengers often used a lap robe as a blanket or similar covering for their legs, lap and feet. A buffalo robe, made from the hide of an American bison dressed with the hair on, was sometimes used as a carriage robe; it was commonly trimmed to rectangular shape and lined on the skin side with fabric.
