Anche il Mezzogiorno si presenta come una regione dotata di un notevole patrimonio di dimore rurali, che sopravvive per lo più nelle aree interne, poiché in quelle litoranee è stato travolto dallo sviluppo dell'insediamento e del turismo. In estrema sintesi si può affermare che qui domina la "masseria", una tipologia che, come negli altri esempi citati, è soggetta a variazioni regionali e locali.
