Text sample:
My agent in Zurich, Switzerland - Charles Ladewig had a fascinating background. He was much older than I, and an expert in the field of carpets. During my visits, he recounted his family history. His family had owned a successful carpet factory in Dresden, in eastern Germany. But being a prominent Jewish family, the factory was eventually seized by the Nazis; however, Charles managed to flee to Belgium, where he thought he would be safe. Then the Germans invaded Belgium. With nowhere else to escape, he hid in an attic, in Brussels, for the duration of the war. The only thing of value he had managed to bring from Germany was a collection of rare stamps. He used these, one or two at a time as payment to his Belgian landlord for food and shelter, and so survived the war.
