Proven Translators
Elena Woontner

   INTERVIEW:

Elena Woontner
Q.  How did you come to the translation business?

A.  I always wanted to be a translator. There is a common ground for understanding beyond all cultural differences, and I was always fascinated by the power of communication. In my teens and early twenties, I constantly traveled to foreign countries. After my degree in foreign languages at the Istituto Orientale in Naples, Italy, I completed an extensive professional certification program in translation and interpretation and started freelancing and collaborating with a cooperative of translators while working different jobs..

Q.  What was the most critical or challenging situation as a translator and how did you manage it?

A.  Finishing the translation of a PowerPoint presentation of financial software and meeting its unreasonable deadline. The excruciating formatting process part took three quarters of the time allocated. It was extremely nerve-wrecking and I remember working very late and literally regretting my career choice, but I eventually made it..

Q.  What was the funniest event in your career as a translator?

A.  Being paid to translate the love correspondence between a Dutch woman and an Italian man.
