Proven Translators
João Roque Dias

   INTERVIEW:

João Roque Dias
Q.  How did you come to the translation business?

A.  By chance. After having worked as a mechanical engineer in international projects abroad and at home, people started asking me to translate their technical materials. They even paid me to do that...

Q.  What was the most critical or challenging situation as a translator and how did you manage it?

A.  Managing the ever shorter deadlines required by the industrial world seems to be the most critical task any translator has to deal with, these days. The only way to do it is to understand that we, the translators, are the masters of our time and that we, and only we, should control the time of delivery of our work. Mission impossible? No, as long as we, the translators, dont miss the deadlines ourselves...

Q.  What was the funniest event in your career as a translator?

A.  (1) To be asked to bid on a project by 4 different companies. (2) Turning down the job, because of the impossible deadline (always the deadline...). (3) Being asked by the successful company to assess the quality of the translation, after it had been refused by the client, because of its (extremely) poor quality.
