Proven Translators
Mary Richards

   INTERVIEW:

Mary Richards
Q.  How did you come to the translation business?

A.  It seemed like a good idea at the time. Languages were the only thing I was ever really any good at, and I wanted a job where they were involved centre-stage, not just on the sidelines. Translation was what I thought of at the time, so here I am.

Q.  What was the most critical or challenging situation as a translator and how did you manage it?

A.  Translators are faced with challenging situations all the time. The worst situations are those where a customer challenges your translation, and the real challenge is dealing with these situations objectively and tactfully. Thankfully, it's not something that happens every day.

Q.  What was the funniest event in your career as a translator?

A.  As a solitary profession, translation is not exactly shot through with belly laughs. But there are certainly entertaining moments. The best entertainment probably comes from some of the translations we're asked to proof-read. They have to be seen to be believed!
