Proven Translators
Özden Arikan

   INTERVIEW:

Özden Arikan
Q.  How did you come to the translation business?

A.  It's my karmic duty.

Q.  What was the most critical or challenging situation as a translator and how did you manage it?

A.  I was doing editing job in an encyclopaedia and it began to be boring towards the end of the fourth year. So, with some co-workers, westarted creating fantastic articles, humorous biographies of each other, etc. The most critical moment in my career came when I realized that I forgot one such encyclopaedia "article" among the copies of the real ones, because I had to take the elevator to catch it before it got to the printing shop in the basement. (I am claustrophobiac and have panic attack in elevators.)

Q.  What was the funniest event in your career as a translator?

A.  Standing trial for my subversive activities against family values and public moralities, namely, translating Philip Roth's cult novel Portnoy's Complaint.
