Proven Translators
Roberta Riccardi

   INTERVIEW:

Roberta Riccardi
Q.  How did you come to the translation business?

A.  First of all I have always loved the English language, I was an exchange student in the US and I decided to try out for Trieste University, Faculty of Modern Languages for Interpreters and Translators. I passed the entrance exam and in the beginning I wanted to go into interpreting. I did not like it so I opted for translation. I still do some interpreting (liaison) every once in a while.

Q.  What was the most critical or challenging situation as a translator and how did you manage it?

A.  I was asked to translate a technical PPT presentation (several files) on fork lift trucks. I Looked through the first 3-4 files and I decided I could do it. But then I realized I had to know everything about motors, the electrical system, the hydraulic system, etc. It was tough.

Q.  What was the funniest event in your career as a translator?

A.  Well, it was during an interpreting session actually: I was called for a service but when I arrived on site the American person had her own interpreter who kindly said she would prefer to do everything by herself (IT>EN and EN>IT). Fine I said. I won't say anything about how she struggled through the Italian part. Only, I had to tell her how to translate ostrich. She was really embarassed. She wouldn't have been if she let me help in the first place. What do you think?
