INTERVIEW:
 Ren Vinchon
|
Q. How did you come to the translation business?
A. It reminds me of a french joke: "Comment avez-vous trouv le steak ? - par
hasard, sous une frite ...". It was really an accident. A friend of mine was
running a translation agency. I made a test, and he found it good! And here I
am, 22 years later ...

Q. What was the most critical or challenging situation as a translator and how did you manage it?
A. I think every translation is a challenge. I translate mostly patents, and even if I've translated thousands of them, I nearly always wonder why some people are unable to write in a concise and intelligible way ... That's the way I see technical translation: giving the meaning and giving it clearly.
Q. What was the funniest event in your career as a translator?
A. Another french joke ... At the beginning of my "career", I was working mostly for the automotive industry, translating "workshop manuals". There were sentences that came again and again. One was "ne pas s'approcher du moteur avec une flamme nue". So I changed from time to time "flamme" into "femme", just to see if somebody would notice it. It may have been printed on some manuals! |
