The Neuron Chip
The core, or the “brain” of the node, is formed by the Neuron Chip: a semiconductor chip with three pro-cessors, memory and various flexible interfaces to the outside world. The Neuron Chip was developed by Echelon Corporation especially for use in decentralized automation networks.


Transceiver
The device is connected to the network, for example to a twisted pair cable, to enable data exchange with other nodes. A LONWORKS network can, however, also run over a number of other media, for example over power lines or radio frequency.
In order to match the demands of the various transfer media, the connection between the Neuron Chip and the network medium is made over a special coupling unit.
This unit is called a transceiver, due to its ability to both transmit and receive.
