Goree Island in Senegal was a seaside fortress converted to the slave trade by the Portuguese. In its dungeon, thousands of shackled Africans huddled in squalor before herded onto ships bound for Europe and America to be sold as servants and objects of curiosity to households. Over two centuries later, spurred by the depth of poverty and conflict and deprivation in their home countries, and drawn by the allure of a better life in the Western world. Many African immigrants embark on the very dangerous and illegal crossing of the Mediterranean seas in overloaded and rickety boats that stand little chance of weathering the perils of the journey, trying to escape their war torn countries or in search of a new start in life. The irony is that centuries after slavery, many Africans are still dying in the Atlantic seas trying to reach the shores of countries that once enslave them, in the mistaken belief that they would gain maximum improvement in their economic condition in these countries. Only few reach that destiny.
