The fall of Aztec Tenochtitlan: Explanations From Three Different Historians
Tenochtitlan, an ancient city lost in myth due to its hastened demise, has had historians continually searching for answers and developing various explanations of how the Aztec city collapsed so rapidly to the Spanish. Most Historians of the sixteenth century would describe the fall of the Aztecs as a clear result of Spanish domination and might, as well as a product of God’s will towards the holiness of their actions. However as the Spaniards of the original conquest began to pass on, newer generations of Aztecs told the story of the conquest the way those who had come before them saw it, and historians were much more inclined to tell the fall of the empire based on explanations from both the Spanish and Aztecs. Later historians sought to answer the unrequited questions of the lost city in ways in which they interpreted the stories given to them by both sides. Three different viewpoints given by William H. Prescott, Ross Hassig, and the analysis given by Professor Ferry have offered insight into what may have been; was it a clash of civilizations, downfall due to differences of technologies and strategies, or was it an encounter of cultures? All three historians develop their own distinct revelation on what may have happened, starting in 1519, for Aztec Tenochtitlan.
