THE PRIEST
Daniel O’Brian was born in Ireland in the late seventies, a normal child from a normal family. Growing up in a good Catholic community, his first calling to the church was as an altar boy. Even at the early age of fourteen, he was not exactly a child to go by the rules. On more than one occasion he and the other boys would sneak into the dressing room behind the chapel to sample the wine. As he grew older, he found himself more and more drawn to the church, until at the age of twenty-seven, having gone through many different jobs, each as unsatisfying as the last, he fulfilled a dream and joined a seminary. For the next seven years his studies included theology, religious beliefs, and liberal arts, but of all the studies required for priesthood, the most interesting for Daniel was the history of the church and the very origin of religion.
From the crucifixion to the Holy Grail, from martyrdom to the saints, Daniel read and studied everything he could find, and slowly over the years he accumulated information that he could not share with others, not even the bishop.
To reveal what he had discovered would certainly jeopardize his path to priesthood. His findings were considered by the church to be of a very sensitive nature, and it was frowned upon to question the belief or its ways. Blind faith was still a very strong tool, and Daniel knew full well that the final test of whether or not he had a vocation to the priesthood was the sole call of this man. The bishop’s choice was definitive.
Finally, at the age of thirty-four and with the bishop’s blessing, he was ordained a transitional deacon, making his promises of celibacy and obedience.
One year later, Daniel O’Brian was ordained as a priest of the Catholic church, and from then on was known as Father O’Brian.
