In the displays in this area, Wood, we follow a Song-era scholar as he works his way through the rigorous Imperial Examination system in hopes of becoming a government official .Students were tested on their command of policy issues, Confucian classics, and even poetry writing. While many boys completed basic schooling, only the especially promising students went on to advanced study for the examinations. A display nearby tells the story of a scholar who transcended his humble beginnings to become prime minister. Throughout its history, Singapore has had a similar meritocracy, in which promising students of all backgrounds can achieve success. In fact, the Imperial Examination system was the precursor to the civil service examinations of today.

Another display here shows the tools of a student, known as the “four treasures”: calligraphy brush, ink stick, ink slab, and paper. A student of little means would have to work in order to pay for these expensive materials.

During the Song Dynasty, students from all over the land travelled for weeks or even months to the capital city for the imperial examinations. The student carried not only his books and materials, but also his sleeping mat, food and anything else he’d need to survive the long trip. Look for the display that shows some of these items.

In the final display here, you’ll see the victorious student. The student appointed “Number One” scholar would be paraded through the streets on horseback, wearing a green robe presented by the emperor and a tall hat. A Song Dynasty scholar had to work hard and travel far to earn an official position in society – just like wood, which must be carved, chiselled and polished in order to become a work of art.
