THE STATE OF ENGINEERING DESIGN GRAPHICS IN THE
UNITED STATES
Theodore J. BRANOFF
North Carolina State University, Raleigh, North Carolina, U.S.A.
ABSTRACT: The last 30 years has seen some drastic changes in the field of engineering design
graphics. In the United States, university programs have gone from courses focused on traditional
drafting topics using only instrument drawing techniques to curricula designed around product
lifecycle management and constraint-based solid modeling. This paper examines the current state of
engineering design graphics in the United States by looking at middle school, high school,
community college, and university program offerings and examples of student work.
Keywords: Graphics education, Engineering Design Graphics, Spatial Visualization
1. INTRODUCTION
Describing the “state of engineering design
graphics in the United States” is a difficult task
since there are so many different types of
programs at so many different types of
educational institutions. Young people can
begin to explore formal engineering graphics
concepts as early as 12 years old. In high
school they can elect to study mechanical
graphics or architectural graphics. After high
school, there are several options for
post-secondary study including community
college, technical school, or university. Figure
1 illustrates options for moving through the
educational process toward employment.
At all of these levels, faculty and other
concerned individuals continuously strive to
make sure students are receiving the most
current content and technology.
