Die Data Matrix Kennzeichnung beruht auf einem 2D-Code nach ISO/IEC 16022 und ist im Grundsatz mit den herkömmlichen Barcode Kennzeichnungen vergleichbar. Durch die Nutzung der Kennzeichnungsfläche in beiden Dimensionen ergeben sich allerdings folgende Vorteile:
• hohe Informationsdichte = geringer Platzbedarf
