CHAPTER ONE:
+/- 10 PAGES
Example of text:
The early autumn morning when I first screamed out frightened by the ritual chanting and razor-sharp circumcision tool of the moil*, came about as the Central European capital of my birth was going through the more dramatic events of the twentieth century.
In those pre-war days Bucharest was “Le Petit Paris”, like ancient Rome built on seven hills, elegant and glamorous. Its better-off social classes, both gentile and Jewish, were friendly and intermixed. Few of them cared more than marginally about religious practices. Instead, the gentiles loved chopped liver and “gefillte Fisch”; the Jews couldn’t keep away from smoked eels and Prosciuto di Parma … and just about all loved champagne.
Generally, they had been close since childhood. Also they’d all been educated from kindergarden on at one of the capital’s better-rated learning institutions, the boys at Saint Lazar’s or the German Evangelical School, the girls by the nuns at Notre Dame or at the French-run Academie Ronsard - also known as l’École Française.
Example of text:
Some details of my now three-quarter-century-long
life are, as I’m about to record them, rather
vague, like pretty much everyone else’s.
Others are crystal-clear and I remember them
as if they had occurred just yesterday.
As I recall them some are happy, others jolly,
others terribly sad and should better have
been forgotten; but they too belong to my tale
and therefore deserved to be mentioned.
