For Karl, the illegitimate heir to the Carolingian royal dynasty, life was one exciting adventure after another. And living with his best friend Waldo made it all that much better.
A year after they met the Pope, Karl and Waldo were travelling across the Alps into northern Italy with Pippin’s army, to the cities of Ravenna and Pavia.
Waldo and Karl were still young teenagers, embarking on their greatest adventure together, before their destinies took them in vastly different directions. It was their first trip to Ravenna, an important city in history as the capital of the Western Roman Empire in the 5th century, and Byzantine Italy in the centuries following.
Soon after they reached Ravenna, Pippin’s forces drove the Lombards out of the city. Several years later, in 756, he gifted Ravenna to the Pope.
After the Lombards had left, chased by Pippin’s soldiers, Waldo and Karl were shown around the city. Everywhere they looked they saw new things that fascinated them, especially the buildings. What excited them the most was the magnificent octagon church of San Vitale. They could immediately see why their teacher Othmar had spoken of it with such awe. Just as he had told them it would, its inspiring beauty took their breath away.
“It is as if the heavens and the earth were touching,” Othmar had said. “You feel that the Almighty God Himself is there with you and your prayers will be answered immediately.”
