Beispieltext:
This is the story of a German girl, Renate, who was born in Berlin during World War II. She did not leave for some place safer. She stayed on, lived in, and grew up with the two German nations born just after her, living through times of world war, cold war, the Berlin Wall, and unification. The account of her life is embedded in the times in which Germany was always on center stage.
With her husband at the Eastern front and bombs over Berlin, Renate’s mother fled with her two children to the security of a small town in the east. After capitulation, the town was first occupied by the Americans, only to be passed on to the Soviets. Facing ensuing hardship and injustice in the East, at the age of 15, Renate escaped to West Berlin. Years later, her mother and brother followed.
Settling down in West Berlin, Renate married a chemical engineer from India. Traveling alone to other countries, like India and the US, opened her eyes to the free world at peace. Her husband found work in West Germany, only to be denied a stay permit by the district authorities, as he was a foreigner: he was asked to leave, along with his wife, who was a German citizen. Only the fact that she was gravely ill saved them from eviction.
In addition to raising two sons, Renate also began a stage career, assisting her husband in his hobby as a magician. Assignments led her to many parts of the world, like South Africa, where her multi-racial family visited only one year after apartheid was abolished. A decade later, she met the ultimate challenge: severe and multiple ailments. With her strong willpower, she conquered this obstacle, also.
In essence, the story has relevance to all subjects caught up in cold wars, civil wars, and chaos, in random revolts and ruthless regimes. The reader will learn what John F. Kennedy meant when he made his historic remark in 1963, “Ich bin ein Berliner.”
