Designing the Change
In a presentation to a group of directors for a construction material manufacturer, I showed a slide that had random dots scattered across a white background.
“What do you see?” I asked.
After a few people hazarded their guesses, I switched to the next slide that showed the same dots, but they were connected to represent the Pegasus star constellation. Once I explained how to trace the constellation, they could all see the outline of the winged horse of Greek mythology.
I said, “That’s how the project might feel to your people right now. They can see lots of dots, but they may not see how to connect them. From where they’re sitting right now, they don’t understand how each isolated element relates to the big picture. Until they do, they cannot imagine it all coming together in something as majestic as a mythical horse.”
By the end of the mobilization phase, you have decided on a plan of action—your team’s proposal of how to deliver the desired strategic results. Crusading is about gaining additional support for your proposed solution and about filling in the blanks. You hold a map that has your current position and your proposed route to your destination, but that is all your map reveals. You must finish filling in the details before you can get under way.
