Definition of Operational Risk
For a long time, there was absence of defiritioral certainty as regards Operational Risk
For many institutiors, it was used as a catch-all phrase covering everytling that wasn't a
typical financial risk. However, the catch-all definition lacked clarity as to the exact types
of Operational Risks faced by orgarizations, and did not provide a proper basis for
measuring risk and calculating capital requirements.
The Basel Committee on Banking Supervision (BCBS) settled on a delinition which is
now largelyfollowed bythe banking industry
"The risk of loss resulting from inadequate or failed intemal processes, people and
systems or from extemal events (deliberate, accidental or ratural)”.
Essentially, Operational Risk:
Involves the danger of damage to either you firm’s clierts (resulting in financial loss) or
harm to you firm’s reputation;
Relates fundamentally to people, systems, and processes;
ls usualy accidental or mintended but maysometimes be deliberate.
