Ask any fisherman who started the venerable company of Farlow’s, and the response will almost certainly be: “Charles Farlow.” The reference used by most collectors, Graham Turner’s Fishing Tackle: The Ultimate Collector’s Guide, tells you: “Charles Farlow started his fishing tackle business in 1840 at 221 The Strand, London, trading as C Farlow.” But it wasn’t Charles; it was his brother John. And the company didn’t start in The Strand, either.
We have to go back to John King Farlow, the father of both Charles and John, to trace the genesis of the world’s oldest tackle firm. A solicitor in the city of London, John was frankly a bit of a cad. He took to heart the advice given to him by Mr Gotobed, solicitor to the Duke of Bedford, to whom John was articled. “"My boys never marry for money, but do marry where money is."
John developed a taste for baccarat, then very much in vogue, though he did not have the money to indulge this pastime. But in 1809 an attractive young woman who had inherited £10,000 (a huge amount in those days) came into the offices and asked advice on how she should invest her money. Farlow knew the answer and married her (though she sadly died after only two years of marriage).
