Born in 1943 in France at the height of WW2; Lucienne Marcelle Boye was the product of a working class family in a suburb of Paris. Her life would be an amalgam of poverty, dreams and life’s misfortunes that might resonate with characters from a Zola novel. The fabric of her home life, the lack of opportunities offered to girls of her generation and social background, became allies to thwart the act of self fulfilment that Lucy strived to maintain during her life, but it also gave her a skin of self callousness that would strengthen her resolve that would see her through the many difficult times that awaited her during her life.
I have attempted to state plainly and without embellishment, the facts that surround the life of Lucy Boye. It is not a unique life by any means, but a life in which one woman’s struggle became the matrix that abetted in her attempts to raise her three sons in the face of incredible odds, yet simultaneously, discover her real self and some rare moments of joy that life can sometimes provide.
