ABIDJAN. It is 11.59 p.m. I am lying on a couch
awake, balancing a laptop on my legs, typing something. I
don’t live in a sybaritic apartment, but I have the basic things
that I need to lead a normal and simple life in a foreign
country: a bed, a dining table with chairs, a television set, a
kitchen, and a basic washing machine. Tomorrow and all of
its problems is just a minute away. The distance between the
present and the future is a matter of seconds now. Even the
notion of time becomes relative. I called yesterday ‘today’,
and when tomorrow comes ‘today’ will become yesterday.
As days change into weeks, weeks into months, and months
into years, I realize the brevity of life, and decide to live each
day as if it was the last day, seizing every opportunity to
make a difference. This has become my philosophy of life.
