倘使从高空俯瞰平安市，20座半球形、被珍珠膜覆盖的城市综合体是城中最傲人的存在。八年前，当一座又一座珍珠城在平安市最重要的路段拔地而起，整个城市却越来越重地陷入了日益沉郁的灰霾。于是珍珠城同样光彩不再，都变成了灰色的半球。每天凌晨5点钟，珍珠城自我清洁的那个瞬间，一种低沉的嗡嗡声回荡全市。然后是一声“嘭”的闷响，沉积一日的灰霾从珍珠城的外膜上被弹开，瀑布般倾泻到外膜的底层。在周围的街道上激起一阵小小的尘暴。那时，街上少有行人，凌晨就开始工作的清洁工则会尽量避开周边的区域，并在尘暴消歇之后开始清扫。
