Text sample:
On a radiant day in the third week of their vacation, Antonio and Elizabeth went ashore so he could drive her to some of the little villages that cluster atop and around the mountains of Province. They started along the coast, the top down, radio blaring Tommy Dorsey tunes.
Elizabeth felt the sun starting to burn her bare arms as Antonio headed up toward the hills. She was wrapped in a heavenly sense of freedom. No schedule, no destination. Just the two of them roaring along the twisting road leading them high into the Maritime Alps.
Antonio shouted over the wind, "Can you imagine the ancient Roman legionnaires marching along these crests?" They drove until they reached a small village clustered high up on one of the massifs. It clung defiantly to the craggy cliffs, each tile-topped building seeming to depend on its neighbor not to fall. Elizabeth wondered at the industry of the people who dared build such a remote community.
Antonio had told her to wear her hiking shoes." The best way to enjoy the scenery is to get out in it," he said. They parked along a small shaded square that served as the economic and cultural heart of the tiny commune. On their way to search out picnic food at the various shops that bordered the square, they passed some villagers having their coffee outside a café. "Bonjour, Madame, Monsieur," the friendly natives greeted them, their dark eyes smiling out from wrinkled faces. Years of the mountain sun had cured their skin to leather.
