So that is how the three of us—Chloe, Charlie and I—found ourselves in Kinshasa with a very old, very broken Land Rover. I’m a former army officer and acted as the mechanic and Chloe’s a doctor. We’d already spent four months driving from London to Kinshasa through West Africa. Charlie, a photojournalist, had just flown in. Originally the plan had been to put 9Bob on a barge and float him upstream to Kisangani, from where we would drive to South Sudan. It would take a month we thought—three weeks on the boat and a week on the road. We had been covering an average of 100 miles a day on the road up to this point. It would be reasonably easy; the only issues would be drinking water on the boat and the Lord’s Resistance Army, who were said to be kidnapping people in the area that we were going to drive through. Not ideal, but we would deal with it when we got to it. This turned out to be the motif for the whole trip.
