Rapidly, she had turned from being a poor girl into a mother of seven children and manager of a business and the wife of an elderly Chinese man who was growing older by the day. She had tried to change his ways, but this was impossible. She had tried to change her Chinese husband’s looks to make him look younger and more westernized, but this was impossible too. It didn’t matter how much effort she had put in, but, unfortunately for her, he had remained, both from the inside and the outside, the same person she had met decades ago, a Chinese man from Old China, a man almost 20 years older than her, a man born in Imperial China during the reign of China’s last dynasty. Her husband couldn’t be made to change because he was comfortable being who he was. He couldn’t become the person she wanted him to become because he originated from an ancient culture, a man set in stone, a man molded in the ancient frame from his ancestors, a man carved from granite. She could change his looks - only slightly - but she couldn’t do anything about his personality - that she could never change.
