English > German: Translation of an unusual book about relationships

The book is a memoir-cum-meditation on male-female romantic relationships and related matters (especially my highly unusual family background), related from the standpoint of a person (me) who has a rather unusual take on the whole situation and who has done a considerable amount of reading and thinking on the subject – in addition to extensive experience.

I’m looking for a German translator who’s willing and able to take a creative approach to adapting the book for a German-speaking audience. I speak German fluently (it’s my second language) and have lived and worked in Germany, and what I’d really like to find is a translator who sees herself as a partner and collaborator in the writing process, rather than a “faithful” transcriber of someone else’s prose. In other words, I want someone who’s interested in transforming my book into one that could have been written in German and does not at all sound like a translation and who’s willing to make whatever changes in the source text that she deems necessary in order to produce a truly German book that will appeal to a wide readership.

In your proposal, all you need to do is indicate, in either German or English, that you understand the kind of translator and translation I’m looking for, and we’ll take it from there.

I look forward to hearing from you.
