An important discovery made by David Johnston is that Hobbes does not pretend that his idea of institution serves as a bona fide mechanism that effectively warrants the subject’s sustainable obedience; instead, Hobbes intends to employ his arguments to persuade his readers to observe their political obligation under the context of a pre-existing state. According to this reading, the state of nature, i.e., a pre-societal condition is more or less a rhetorical device to preempt the subject from escaping from his political obligation.
