Example du texte :
This experiment of a tragédie set to music, illicited such controversy that it was barely performed due to literary criticism of its structure, as well as its poetry. Defenders of French tragedie criticized the literary value of opera’s rhymes set to music, and tried to impose its dramatic conventions, such as « vraisemblance », and unity of place and time. Respected critics, such as Corneille, who conceived of music as a way to cover the noise of machinery in the theatre des machines, doubted at text that could be sung successfully. The superfluous characters added to the original literary sources, such as God’s alighting in distracting machinery changing the direction of the plot as deus ex machina, were deemed pure entertainment without literary merit. Consequently Perrin preferred the genre of the Pastorale to side-step comparisons to the French tragédie of Racine or Corneille. He argued that this different type of poetic text provided the necessary room for a setting to music untenable with a tragic text. In his conception, opera’s strength as a genre was not to be preoccupied with an intrigue: based on a respected literary source, it could illustrate the episodes or “tableaux” of a well-known story and embody its dramatic passions. Pomone (1671), a success, was nonewithstanding ridiculed by contemporary literary critics.
