French > English: Evaluation of an existing translation
Hello, I am Aurelia and I have an assignement for uni this term.
I was wondering to know if you could help me.
We need to evaluate the translation of an existing book ( from french translated to english) and I chose "LE PERE GORIOT" by Balzac. But I coudn`t find yet a translator of this book so maybe you could help me.
This are the project guidelines:
-It should be 2000 words in length.
-The project consists of an evaluation of an existing translation or translations of a work of literature, history, philosophy or critical analysis from any period.
-Our project should cover the following points:
• The context which led to the work being translated – the importance of the work or its author, its commercial success, its topicality, etc
• The publisher – their specialisms, their past successes with translations
• The choice of translator, their notoriety or otherwise, their career as translators
• An analysis of the specific characteristics of the chosen text – its genre, its style, the factors that a translator has to cope with
• A detailed analysis of the way in which the text has been translated
• An evaluation of how successful the translation is. This section should include examples of how you would have translated the text differently, if that is the case.
We should give evidence of our ability to talk precisely and analytically about translating, using precise terminology where appropriate. The project should be carefully organized so as to handle a wealth of detail within a clear, overall framework.
Example of text:
<Le Pere Goriot>, by Balzac, translated to english.
