There are things I need to tell you, about what happened before you were born, about me and your father. I told you that you were the result of a foolish act, a chance encounter with a man who had loved me and left me. But it was not like that at all, and now I want you to know what really happened. I wanted to tell you when you were here in the summer, but I was afraid to start, fearful that the words would burst out, explode into confusion, so I have decided to write it all down. It will be better this way. I know that conversation would tempt me to embellish the story, guilt to diminish it. This way the truth, the whole truth, will be set down.
