Pete Simonelli and me we were squeezed together on the steps of a car in the Boston Subway. “You should cut out all this studying you do an’ go for some action,” Pete said. “Whyn’t you hook school with me?”
“I did my homework,” I said. “I’m going to school.”
The door opened at the Boylston Street station and we had to step down and get off the car onto the platform to make room for people to get off. Nearby to our right was a long flight of stairs that led up to a park, the Boston Common. .
“I’m hooking,” Pete said. “Come on with me.”
“I can’t,” I said.
We waited watching people step down onto the platform.
“I’m going,” he said.
He turned away and began walking towards the exit. When a man stepped off the car and onto the platform and it was the moment for me to get back on, I didn’t move. Two people stepped up and on the car. I had time to get on but I just stood there in front of the open door without moving. The door shut in front of me. I turned away and hurried over and pushed through one of the turnstiles. Then I began running up the long flight of stairs that led up to the Boston Common.
When I reached Pete, he turned to me and a big smile came to his face.
“You’re going for some action,” he said. “Screw the Boston Latin School.”
