This paper will explore how teachers can be equipped to assist students in the interpersonal aspects of their writing – i.e. assisting them in adopting “appropriate” or “effective” stances towards their material and in projecting “appropriate” personas, according to the social context for which the text is intended, its audience and its communicative objectives. Towards this end, the paper will explore what linguistic knowledge is required if teachers are systematically to understand and evaluate the interpersonal workings of both student texts and any example texts they might use as models in the classroom. Thus the paper will be concerned with outlining language-analysis frameworks suitable for teachers and by which they will be able, for example, to systematically and explicitly (1) identify and explain the interpersonal effects operating in a given model text, (2) identify and explain the interpersonal differences between contrastive model texts, (3) evaluate student texts with respect to how they operate interpersonally, and (4) track individual students’ development over time with respect to their management of the interpersonal.
