derivação regressiva

My comment:

back-formation: A new word created by removing an affix from an already existing word, as vacuum clean from vacuum cleaner, or by removing what is mistakenly thought to be an affix, as pea from the earlier English plural pease.
Derivação regressiva: derivação regressiva existe quando morfemas da palavra primitiva desaparecem. Ex.: mengo (flamengo), dança (dançar), portuga (português).

derivação regressiva ou deverbal

My comment:

Veja o que significa "backformation":

Backformation: A suffix identifiable from other words is cut off of a base which has previously not been a word; that base then is used as a root, and becomes a word through widespread use. Examples: pronunciate (< pronunciation < pronounce), resurrect (< resurrection), enthuse (< enthusiasm), self-destruct (< self-destruction < destroy), burgle (< burglar), attrit (< attrition), burger (< hamburger).

Compare com o que se denomina derivação regressiva ou deverbal - redução da palavra primitiva (frangão > frango gajão > gajo, rosmaninho > rosmano, sarampão > sarampo, delegado >delega, flagrante > flagra, comunista>comuna). Cria substantivos, que denotam ação, derivados de verbos, daí ser chamado também derivação deverbal (amparo, choro, vôo, corte, destaque, conserva, fala, pesca, visita, denúncia etc.).
