My comment:

For what it's worth: letter of credit is certainly Akkreditiv. My guess is that the "retention" aspect has something to do with the ownership of whatever is the subject of the letter of credit. Anyway, Retention is used in German as a Fremdwort in various contexts, so why not use it here?

Thanks. I decided to use 'Rueckbehaltungsakkreditiv', however, with your solution I'd be on the safer side, I guess!
