Depends..on the context, if "der heutige Tag" means the present time, I would say present day, But if a single day is meant I would say today

It's supposed to be doubly unlucky, as the day on which Christ died and I forget why 13 is supposed to be an unlucky number - it may have to do with thirteen at table at the Last Supper.
