In the context, which concerns bio-energy, this would mean transfer of heat energy by convection, without involving any physical movement of matter.

If you google for "heating systems" + "material exchange", you'll find a number of promising hits, which also include "heat exchange".

Thanks, Michael. I'm a chemist. What branch of chemistry are you in? I've heard of mass and heat transfers and whatnots. This is a really technical term not to be underestimated.
