Amanda Haste PhD, DipTrans(IoLET), MCIL, CL  See profile asked this question:

Language pair:

French > English

Subject:

Technical / Engineering

Level of diffculty:

Easy / medium

Word or term in question:

plongeur/plongeur scaphandrier

Context:

Job descriptions of commercial divers, but scaph can work (welding etc), plongeur can't

Keywords:

Can't find an ENglish tech term anywhere. Scaph = 'certified diver'? Both are qualified, but scaph is more so....doesn't seem to be a matter of depth either, so 'diver/deep sea diver' distinction won't work.

The answer of   See profile was rated best

diver/underwater worker

My comment:

The distinction is the type of work done and the umbilical tying the diver to a surface plaftform. A diver is normally autonomous.
